Special Interest Groups are informal group gatherings for members of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society for the purpose of sharing research techniques, data and references, and general information regarding the various topics or geographical areas. Non-members are encouraged to join the Society to fully benefit from the Special Interest Groups, but are welcomed to "visit" a group that may be of interest or looks like it may help with a "brick wall."
The Colonial Era Group meets at Sturgis Library in Barnstable Village the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. With one room devoted to Cape Cod and Massachusetts genealogy, another to their maritime collection, and with microfiche resources available, this setting provides a rich environment for those interested in Cape Cod history and genealogy. The Sturgis Library describes the collections and provides directions. For meeting information call (508) 385-4893.
The Computer Users Group was formed for members of CCGS who use computers to research their family lines and organize that research. It meets (typically!) on the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Dennis Public Library, on Hall Street in Dennisport between 10 am and noon. We typically discuss a particular topic for half the meeting and have a general discussion for the other half. This is your chance to interact with others to find good web sites, try to get answers to all your computer problems related to genealogy, discuss suggested software and generally get some tips on how to find information right from your own home. Send an e-mail to Nancy Daniels to receive the monthly reminder e-mail (in case there is a change of time and place) and try us out! All are welcomed!
The Irish Special Interest Group meets at the Dennis Public Library in Dennisport on the fourth Monday of each month at 10:00 A.M. All CCGS members interested in Irish Genealogy are invited to attend these meetings to discuss methods and sources for Irish research in both Ireland and the U.S. For information call 508-432-9601.
Genealogy Software - PAF and Others Group is for CCGS members who wish to learn about and share their experiences using genealogy software programs for tracking their family roots. This is an opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, get advice, and find out which genealogy software package might be best for you. Users of all genealogy software programs are welcome. Meetings are at Ellie Darby's home in Yarmouth Port, the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 P.M. For information, call 508-362-6033, or email Ellie at darbytn@capecod.net.
Scandinavian Group: members who have Scandinavian ancestors are invited to attend our monthly Interest Group on the first Monday of each month, September to May, at 1:00 PM. If the first Monday is a holiday, we then meet on the second Monday. For further information, call Paula Grundberg at 508-430-1356.
The countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are represented in our group, and resources and search references are available. Members ask and answer questions, share experiences in searching records to locate the parish their ancestors came from, talk about recent trips to locate and meet ancestors and relatives, and discuss how to plan trips. We also have "kaffe och dopp"!!
The group has a Christmas Scandinavian luncheon and a June outing where members participate in sharing food specialties. All are welcome!
